Do Chiropractic Physicians Services for Treatment of Low Back and Neck Pain Improve the Value of Health Benefit Plans?

An Evidence-Based Assessment on Incremental Impact on Population Health and Total Health Care Spending

Low back and neck pain are extremely common conditions that consume large amounts of health care resources. A study conducted by Harvard Medical School and Mercer Health, looked at the cost effectiveness of low back and neck pain treatments among different medical modalities. The results displayed that chiropractic care is more effective than other modalities for treating low back and neck pain. When considering cost and effectiveness together, chiropractic physician care for low back and neck pain is highly cost effective. This represents a good value in comparison to medical physician care and to widely accepted cost-effectiveness thresholds. This study did not include prescription drug expenditures; if this information had been included, it would have likely increased the studies estimates of cost-effectiveness of chiropractic care.
